Statement from Crossroads Repertory Theatre
Crossroads Repertory Theatre has been informed that Indiana State University will conclude its institutional funding support of the program as part of broader budget decisions within Academic Affairs.
For many years, Crossroads Rep has been proud to serve the Wabash Valley as a space for bold storytelling, professional artistry, student learning, and community connection. We are deeply grateful to the artists, staff, students, audiences, donors, and partners whose passion and dedication have made this theatre a vital cultural home.
While this moment marks the end of an important chapter, it does not diminish the impact Crossroads has had or the belief that theater matters. The relationships built, the artists trained, and the stories shared through this work will continue to resonate well beyond any single funding decision.
Thank you to everyone who has stood with Crossroads Rep over the years. Your support, creativity, and advocacy have meant everything.
With gratitude,
Crossroads Repertory Theatre
Update from the Indiana State University Provost
Indiana State University’s Academic Affairs division has made the decision to conclude its institutional funding support of Crossroads Repertory Theatre in Terre Haute as part of a broader effort to address ongoing budgetary pressures and ensure long-term financial sustainability.
Like many public universities nationwide, Indiana State continues to navigate significant financial constraints driven by shifting enrollment patterns, rising operational costs, and evolving funding structures. As a result, the University has been required to make difficult but necessary decisions about how to allocate limited resources in ways that most directly support its academic mission and the priorities outlined in its Strategic Plan.
For many years, Crossroads Repertory Theatre contributed meaningfully to the cultural vitality of the Wabash Valley. The University recognizes and deeply appreciates the leadership, artists, staff, and supporters whose dedication and creativity helped shape the theatre’s impact on the region’s arts community.
However, as Indiana State advances its Strategic Plan, the University’s Academic Affairs division is prioritizing investments that directly support student success, academic excellence, and high-impact learning experiences embedded within its curricular framework. This requires a sharper focus on core academic functions and student-centered initiatives that can be sustained over the long term.
While institutional funding for Crossroads Repertory Theatre will conclude, Indiana State University remains committed to the arts as an important component of higher education. The University will continue to support creative expression, scholarship, and cultural engagement through its academic programs and student experiences.
Respectfully,
Brad Balch
Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
